How to Jump a Car Battery
Whether it’s because you left the car’s lights on overnight or the battery is reaching the end of its lifespan, learning how to jump a car battery is an essential skill for every driver. In this guide, our Ira Mazda team will walk you through the step-by-step process needed to revive your vehicle and get back on your way from Point A to Point B around Westwood, Dedham, and Norwood, Massachusetts.
Step 1: Gather Your Tools
Before attempting to jump-start a car, make sure you have the necessary tools on hand. You'll need a set of jumper cables and a second vehicle with a fully charged battery. Remember to make sure both cars are turned off before proceeding.
Step 2: Position the Vehicles
Place the working vehicle close enough to the dead one so that the jumper cables can reach both batteries but without the vehicles touching. Ensure that both cars are in "park" or in "neutral" for manual transmissions and engage the parking brakes.
Step 3: Identify the Battery Terminals
Identify the positive (+) and negative (-) terminals on both batteries. Typically, the positive terminal is red, and the negative terminal is black.
Connect batteries
Step 4: Connect the Jumper Cables
It's crucial to connect the cables in the correct order to avoid damage to the vehicles or injury. First, connect one end of the red cable to the positive terminal of the dead battery. Next, connect the other end of the red cable to the positive terminal of the working battery.
Then, connect one end of the black cable to the negative terminal of the working battery. Finally, connect the other end of the black cable to an unpainted metal surface on the car with the dead battery. This could be a bolt or a metal bracket but should not be near the battery.
Step 5: Start the Working Vehicle
Start the working vehicle and let it run for a few minutes. This will allow the dead battery to charge.
Step 6: Start the Dead Vehicle
Attempt to start the vehicle with the dead battery. If it doesn't start, wait a few more minutes and try again. Once the dead vehicle starts, leave both cars running for a few more minutes to ensure the battery gets a proper charge.
Step 7: Disconnect the Jumper Cables
Always disconnect the jumper cables in the reverse order of how you connected them. First, remove the black cable from the previously dead vehicle. Then, disconnect the black cable from the working vehicle. Next, take the red cable off the working vehicle. Finally, remove the red cable from the previously dead vehicle.
